The Old West was a place of simpler times. People lived off the land. Anything you needed could either be grown or traded fur. Men worked hard, often on the saddle of a horse. They have the sores to prove it. They tended to drift to where the work was. That could either be a cattle ranch or a cattle drive. That “life” has all but disappeared from the landscape. That is, except for two, old crusty cowhands. (Dusty and Lefty, the “Saddletramps”) Riding their horses on that old lonesome prairie, they drift along, from town to town, occasionally stopping for fresh vittles, more salt-pork and an occasional bath. All they own is carried on their horses. A canteen, a rusty coffee pot, a sack of salt pork, and a guitar. That’s it. They enjoy each other’s company, well…..most of the time.
Funny story how they met…..Lefty had bedded down near a dry gulch and was enjoying his evening vittles. Suddenly, he heard a noise in the nearby brush. He thought it might be a wild animal so he pulled out his Colt 45. As he carefully moved closer, he stumbled on Dusty, down on all fours, searching for a guitar pick that he had dropped. As Lefty stepped on Dusty’s hand, Dusty let out a scream that sounded much like a young school girl, after seeing a spider or snake! Both Lefty’s horse (Champion) and Dusty’s horse (Lil Buttercup) bolted and ran like the wind! Meanwhile, both Dusty and Lefty laughed endlessly and after, Dusty joined Lefty at the campfire for a few songs and a few "pulls" from whiskey jug. The rest is history……..When they stop in town, you can usually spot them in a saloon, where they “wet their whistles” and pluck a tune or two. They don’t stay long, though, as the law is usually close behind. Seems that Lefty always manages to have a fresh steed, even though he has no money. Keeps insisting that they are all “gifts” from fans………If you see the “Saddletramps,”make sure to ask Lefty for his recipe for his famous Prairie Dog Stew, a real staple of the prairie. And if you see them on the prairie around meal time, stop and set a spell, and they’ll share a plate of the stew, taters and beans, a couple of pulls from the jar, along with a few songs!!!!
